14/11/11

13/11/11

Six rounds into the season and the club is travelling well. We have seen some amazing team and individual results and the club has been involved in a number of social events.

The Premier 1 side on a Saturday has started to hit its straps, winning three games in a row, the latest over the highly rated Adelaide side. But while the form is encouraging, the next three games against Payneham (away), Lockleys (home) and Marion (away) loom as season defining.

Premier 1 skipper, Cameron Dickson has also made the final 4 of the Open Singles. He plays the semi final on Monday the 14th of November.

The Premier 2 South side is undefeated and has dropped less than a handful of rinks for the season. They have the highly talented Edwardstown and Hawthorn in the coming fortnight. Winning one of these would probably see the side go into the xmas break on top of the ladder. An amazing and deserved effort.

Other Saturday sides are faring well. Metro 2 West is currently thrid, Metro 3 West is also third, Metro 4 North West is top and the Triples are sitting second on the ladder.

Our Wednesday sides are inconsistent. Premier 1 is middle of the table and the two Metro 1 sides are battling along in the middle of the table.

Our ladies on a Thursday have strung together a number of impressive performances. The top side is currently undefeated and sits atop the ladder. Again the two Metro 1 sides are sitting mid table.

Please don't forget to check out the Grange Bowling Club's Facebook and Twitter pages. Be a fan, like us....GBC "can't stop, won't stop".

6/11/11

Firstly, apologies for the website not being updated for the previous week. In more important matters, Cameron Dickson has made the final 16 of the State Open Singles, Premier 2 South is undefeated and the all other sides in the club are competitive. Please remember to check club championship draws and organise your game prior to the final dates.

17/10/11

A dirty day for the top side on the weekend getting destroyed by a very solid West Lakes outfit. The highlight of the weekend was definately the performance of the Premier 2 side. Two wins, 32 points a perfect start.

9/10/2011

Congratulations to all Saturday Pennant Teams on their victories in the first round. A special congratulations to our team in Premier 2 South. Playing the highly fancied (albeit slightly understrength) Holdfast Bay at Holdfast, our boys in their first ever game in this grade took all 16 points.

The top side on Thursday also had a solid victory.

Also Errol Bungey and Mary Ormsby were recently inducted into the BCiB Hall of Fame. An outstanding recognition for two sublime careers.

With just days to go before the commencement of the new season it is appropriate to acknowledge new members to club as well as thank those who have served the club in recent years, but have decided to move on.

New members to join the GBC this year are: Mark Evans (Hawthorn), Cameron Dickson (Overseas), Rick Zokalj (Rosewater), Alex Gebert (Hawthorn), Mike Anderson (Henley), Peter Symons (Henley)

Those who are leaving are: Scott Nicholls (Toorak-Burnside), David Evans (Toorak-Burnside), Sam Dietrich (Holdfast Bay), Terry O’Brien (Holdfast Bay) and Harry Simlon (West Lakes).

All of these players were members of pennant winning sides and will be missed, especially Terry who was a valued volunteer and a long-standing member of the GBC who had won multiple titles and was an integral member of multiple Premier League victories. We wish all of these players the best for the coming season.

Teams will be updated weekly as will game, club and state championship results.

Dolphins hold off Hurricanes

26.03.11

Grange Bowling Club has revenged last year’s Bowls SA Premier 1 Saturday Grand Final loss by defeating Marion by seven shots in this year’s decider at the West Lakes Bowling Club.
In an enthralling contest, the Dolphins held their nerve against numerous Hurricane challenges, only securing the 78-71 victory in the last two ends of play, with the difference in the end being State Skipper Wayne Ruediger’s six shot win over Stuart Forbes.
The other three rinks were decided by single shot margins with Grange’s Duane Edwards and Carl Schapel having one shot wins over Max Kleinig and Ken Holtham, whilst Ashley Klose secured Marion’s only rink win by picking up a two on the last end against John Nicolai.
In another significant achievement, State player Renata Callisto becomes the first female to win a Bowls SA Saturday Premier 1 pennant, leading in Carl Schapel’s rink.
Congratulations to Grange Bowling Club.

Bowls SA Saturday Premier 1 Grand Final Results:

Max Kleinig 19 lost to Duane Edwards 20
Ashley Klose 19 defeated John Nicolai 18
Ken Holtham 18 lost to Carl Schapel 19
Stuart Forbes 15 lost to Wayne Ruediger 21

METRO 1 WEST WINS PENNANT

Congratulations to the Saturday second side for winning the Pennant, gaining promotion into Premier 2 and most importantly blooding and getting experience into a number of quality young players to help ensure the future of the club.
This is the first time that the club has had two teams in the top two divisions on a Saturday.

History of the Grange Bowling Club

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS.....

In 1907 a meeting of 25 persons was held at the Grange Hotel and the Grange and Henley Beach Bowling Club were founded. It was decided to form the club if 30 members could be guaranteed. This number was quickly forthcoming.

Through the efforts if Mr. A. L. Greig a site in Swan Street (which is now Wilson Court) was obtained. This was soon levelled and the green planted. Couch grass was gathered locally, put through a chaff cutter and broadcast over the ground. Play commenced at the end of January 1908. In 1910 the club entered the B grade competition and in the same year a club house made of asbestos and measuring 20' x 12' was built.

At a meeting of the Grange and Henley Beach Bowling Club, again held at the Grange Hotel in 1911, a request was received from several local ladies in the district that the bowling club lay down a croquet lawn on the northern end of the club on grounds adjoining the Bowling Green. Having laid the croquet green, the ladies then produced a sketch of a club house they would like built.

FROM LITTLE THINGS, BIG THINGS GROW....

Electricity reached the Grange district in 1912 and the members moved a motion to have it connected to the club. It was decided to accept the tender for installing electric light for 26 pounds.

As membership increased, further accommodation became necessary and in 1917 a two-story clubhouse was erected, the ground floor being used as a clubroom and upstairs was a team room and kitchenette. The new clubhouse was officially opened on November 3rd, 1917. Many local clubs regularly used the clubroom for social outings including the Grange School committee, the Seaside Tennis Club, the Girl Guides, the Grange United Basketball Club and the Grange Sailing Club.

Surprisingly the Grange Women's Bowling Club wasn't formed until 1950, when 15 ladies decided to form the Grange Women's Bowling Club.
Improvements to the Clubhouse were regularly added and a meeting was called in 1953 when members were considering a larger clubhouse. A property on the southern boundary of the green was purchased with the help of Mr. Ossie O'Grady who donated 1000 pounds and acted as guarantor of the Club on a building loan of 5400 pounds. And so a new Clubhouse was built and opened in October 1954 and extended again in 1971 after the purchase of another house on the southern side of the property from Joyce and Len Northey.

After the purchase of more houses they were quickly demolished and the southern green named later in honour of Ted Gill was built in 1976. The turf was laid by about 90 members, both men and women. They say it was an amazing sight, viewing these tireless members pushing sprigs of couch into the furrows made by a small handmade plough.

THE INTERNATIONALS

Over the years Grange have had many champion bowlers, both men and women. In the past 50 years 7 women and 24 men and represented South Australia at interstate level.
IN the 1960's, the Collins family played an important part in the club. At one stage Alf Collins, his brothers Roy, Laurie and son, Don, were the four skippers in our top side. Unfortunately the club lost Don when he purchased a market garden near Bolivar and he transferred to the Salisbury Bowling Club. Whilst at Salisbury, Don was chosen in the Australian team for the first World Bowls Championships in Sydney 1966 where he won a gold medal in the Triples and a Silver medal in the Fours. We can't claim Don Collins as a Grange International, but we can brag the eight of our members have proudly worn the green and gold blazer. A record few other clubs in Australia can match.

PENNANT SUCCESS

At Club Pennant level Grange has been very successful over the years winning many championships. Although our ladies have struggled in recent times, for many years in the 1970's, 80's and 90's they were a dominating force. The men too have been very successful and since the finals format was introduced have won the Premier 1 Red Division six times in the last nine years.
